Winter Summit

Some of the best views in Central Oregon have to be earned.

In the middle of winter, reaching the summit of Tumalo Mountain means climbing roughly two steep miles through a landscape buried beneath snow. With snowshoes strapped on and the trail steadily gaining elevation, the forest slowly begins to open as you make your way toward the summit.

Then you reach the top.

Suddenly, the landscape seems endless.

The Three Sisters rise prominently across the horizon, with the rugged summit of Broken Top nearby, all covered in winter white. Turn in another direction and the Cascade Range continues, creating an incredible 360-degree panorama of snow-covered mountains stretching across Central Oregon.

Standing at the summit, it is easy to forget about the effort it took to get there.

The cold air feels sharper.

The mountains seem closer.

And the familiar Central Oregon landscape takes on an entirely different character beneath its winter coat.

It is one of those places where the journey and the destination become equally memorable.

Two steep miles through the snow.

A final climb to the summit.

And a view that makes every step worth it.
