Sunset alpenglow on Central Oregon’s Mt. Bachelor.

Earlier that day, we had taken our first hike around Todd Lake in Central Oregon. The trail revealed beautiful views in every direction, but one particular perspective stopped me. Across the still waters of the lake, Mount Bachelor rose above the surrounding landscape, and I could immediately imagine what the scene might become in the final light of the day.

So we returned.

As afternoon gave way to evening, the sun began to sink lower over the Cascades. The surrounding landscape slowly softened into shadow, while the last rays of sunlight reached across the mountain. Then, for a fleeting moment, Mount Bachelor began to glow with the warm, ethereal light of alpenglow.

The scene I had imagined earlier that day had finally come to life.

Todd Lake rested quietly in the foreground, reflecting the calm of the evening, while Mount Bachelor stood beyond it, bathed in the final light of the day. It was a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best photographs begin long before the shutter is pressed.

Sometimes, you simply have to recognize the possibility of a moment… and return when the light is ready.
