Summer in the Cascades does not always begin when the calendar says it should.

At Elk Lake near Bend, Oregon, Mount Bachelor rises above the surrounding forest with the last remnants of winter still clinging to its slopes. Patches of snow remain near the summit, slowly disappearing beneath the warmth of longer days and the arrival of another Central Oregon summer.

Across the lake, the mountain appears once again.

Calm water creates a beautiful reflection of Mount Bachelor, extending the snow-covered peak into the lake below and bringing a sense of symmetry and stillness to the landscape.

It is one of those scenes that perfectly captures the transition between seasons in the high Cascades.

Winter has not completely disappeared.

Summer is just getting started.

And for a brief time, the two seasons share the same landscape.

Soon the remaining snow will melt, warmer days will settle over Elk Lake, and another summer of hiking, paddling, camping, and exploring the Cascade Lakes will be underway.

But for now, Mount Bachelor still carries a little piece of winter while its reflection rests quietly in the waters below.
