Twisted Sunset

Sunset along the island of Maui.

For years, I had driven past this stretch of Maui’s western coastline without ever stopping. Just south of Lahaina, an old, weathered tree stood quietly along the shore. Twisted by time, wind, and the relentless rhythm of the Pacific. I had noticed it many times, but somehow, I had never taken the time to truly see it.

One evening, as the sun began its descent toward the horizon, I decided to finally pull over and explore.

The fading light transformed the coastline. The sky began to glow with the warm, luminous colors of sunset, while the ancient tree stood silhouetted against the ocean, its contorted branches reaching toward the evening sky as if shaped by the island itself. What had once been just another familiar landmark along a well-traveled road suddenly became something far more meaningful: a timeless subject waiting patiently to be discovered.

Sometimes, the most extraordinary photographs are found in places we have passed a hundred times before. We simply have to slow down long enough to see them.
