Sometimes, the photograph you remember is not the one you planned to capture. On this evening in Maui, I had my camera pointed south toward a group of palm trees as sunset faded across the Pacific. Then I looked behind me. To the north, brilliant shades of pink and purple were spreading across the sky. I quickly changed my composition and captured the unexpected color. It was a perfect reminder of something I try to practice whenever I photograph a landscape. Have a plan. Find your composition. But never stop looking. Sometimes the best light is happening behind you.
