Always Go

It was the final evening of a weeklong escape to Maui, and the last sunset I would have the opportunity to photograph for some time. As the afternoon faded toward evening, heavy clouds gathered across the sky, offering little indication that anything remarkable was about to happen.

I hesitated.

Was it worth heading out? Perhaps the sunset would disappear entirely behind the clouds. Perhaps there would be nothing to photograph at all.

But then I remembered that this was my last evening on the island. So I decided to go.

As the sun began to sink toward the Pacific, the sky slowly came alive. A warm, luminous glow emerged along the horizon, transforming the sky and clouds with rich shades of gold and amber. Along the shoreline, the palm trees became elegant silhouettes against the fading light, creating a scene far more beautiful than I had imagined possible only moments before.

It was a perfect reminder that some of the most extraordinary moments are the ones we almost miss.

That is the story behind Always Go.

Whenever I find myself wondering whether I should venture out for a sunset, I will always remember this evening on Ka'anapali Beach. Because sometimes the sky gives you every reason to stay home, until you decide to go. And sometimes, the sunsets you least expect become the ones you remember forever.
