Fire in the Sky

Some sunsets arrive quietly.

Others seem to set the entire sky on fire.

On this evening above Lake Billy Chinook, fiery shades of red and orange spread across the clouds as Mount Jefferson rose prominently along the horizon. Farther in the distance, Mount Hood could still be seen beneath the glowing evening sky, connecting two of Oregon’s most recognizable Cascade peaks within a single sweeping landscape.

Below them, Lake Billy Chinook stretches across the foreground, adding another layer of depth to an already immense scene.

For a few fleeting moments, the colors continued to intensify.

Deep reds.

Brilliant oranges.

Dark mountain silhouettes beneath a sky that seemed almost too colorful to be real.

These are the sunsets landscape photographers wait for. You can choose the location, study the weather, and find the composition, but ultimately nature decides what happens when the sun approaches the horizon.

On this evening, everything came together.

Lake Billy Chinook below.

Mount Jefferson towering in the distance.

Mount Hood barely visible beyond.

And above it all, the Central Oregon sky burning with the final colors of the day.
