Cascadia Sunset

There are evenings in the Cascades when everything seems to become still.

At Elk Lake near Bend, Oregon, the water settles beneath the surrounding mountains as South Sister and Broken Top rise along the distant horizon. With barely a ripple across the surface, the lake becomes a quiet mirror for the landscape above.

Then the sky begins to change.

Soft blues give way to shades of pink and orange, spreading across the evening sky and reflecting across the calm water below. Mountains that dominate the landscape during the day slowly become silhouettes beneath the fading light.

It is the kind of sunset that does not need to be dramatic to be unforgettable.

No crashing waves.

No approaching storms.

Just mountains, water, color, and stillness coming together for a few fleeting moments in the heart of Central Oregon.

Eventually, the colors fade and the mountains disappear into the approaching night.

But for a moment, the Cascades are painted in color.

The lake becomes a mirror.

The mountains grow quiet.

And another beautiful day in Central Oregon ends beneath a Cascadia sunset.
